Sizzling Turmeric Meatballs

Updated: Mar 25

These turmeric meatballs are a simple, comforting dish that comes together with very little effort. The sauce starts with gently sautéed onion and garlic, followed by tomatoes, stock, and a blend of herbs that slowly simmer to create a rich, aromatic base. Once the meatballs are added, they cook directly in the sauce, absorbing all of those warm flavours.

What makes this recipe a little different is the addition of turmeric. Not only does it give the dish a beautiful golden colour and a subtle, earthy flavour, but it also provides curcumin, the natural compound in turmeric widely recognised for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. It’s an easy way to add extra nutritional value to a comforting, everyday meal.

Ingredients

For the meatballs.
  1. Organic meatballs, Waitrose (you can easily make your own)

For the sauce

  • 1 red onion, finely chopped

  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed

  • 1 tbsp butter or extra virgin olive oil

  • 1 tin (400 g) chopped tomatoes

  • 1 cup fresh stock (beef or vegetable)

  • ½ Kalo Organic beef stock cube (crumbled)

  • 1 tsp turmeric

  • 1 tsp dried oregano

  • 1 bay leaf

  • 5 fresh basil leaves, finely chopped

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Method

  1. Prepare the base

    • Heat 1 tbsp butter or extra virgin olive oil in a large pan over medium heat.

    • Add the finely chopped red onion and cook for about 4–5 minutes until soft.

  2. Add garlic

    • Stir in the crushed garlic and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant.

  3. Build the sauce

    • Add the tin of tomatoes to the pan.

    • Pour in 1 cup of stock, then sprinkle in ½ beef stock cube/powder.

    • Stir well to combine.

  4. Season

    • Add 1 tsp turmeric, 1 tsp oregano, the bay leaf, and salt and pepper to taste.

    • Mix everything well.

  5. Simmer

    • Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer and cook for 10–15 minutes, allowing the flavours to develop.

  6. Add herbs

    • Stir in the finely chopped basil leaves.

  7. Cook the meatballs

    • Add your prepared meatballs to the sauce.

    • Cover and simmer for 15–20 minutes, turning occasionally so they cook evenly and absorb the sauce.

  8. Finish

    • Taste the sauce and adjust salt and pepper if needed.

    • Remove the bay leaf before serving.

Serve these turmeric meatballs with quinoa, your favourite pasta, couscous, or some crusty bread to soak up the delicious sauce....and of course a serving of steamed greens! It’s a warm, flavourful meal that proves healthy cooking can still be simple and deeply comforting.
