Cacao, Date, Almond & Tahini Energy Balls

Updated: Jan 26

If you’re a chocaholic like me, you will love these moorish energy balls.

They taste like rich, fudgy brownie truffles, but they’re made with simple, wholesome ingredients and boosted with whey protein for satiety and keeping the blood sugar levels in check. No baking, no complicated steps, just toss everything into a food processor, roll, chill, and you’re done.

The dates bring that caramel-like sweetness, cocoa makes them deeply chocolatey, and almond butter and tahini keep the texture creamy, so the protein powder blends in smoothly (no chalky vibes here).

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rolled oats

  • 10–12 Medjool dates, pitted

  • 1/3 cup cocoa or cacao powder

  • 1/2 cup whey protein powder, I used Organic Protein Company

  • 1/3 cup almond butter, I used Meridian Crunchy Almond Butter

  • 1/3 cup tahini

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • pinch of salt

  • 5-6 tbsp milk or water, as needed (totally depends on the batch, more might be needed, so add a tablespoon at a time)

For rolling the balls in, I used cacao powder, but you could also use chia seeds or shredded coconut.

Method:

Step 1 – Blend the oats. Add oats to a food processor and pulse until they resemble a coarse flour. You can also use a NutriBullet for this.

Step 2 – Add the dry ingredients. Toss in dates, cocoa powder, protein powder, and salt. Pulse until crumbly.

Step 3 – Make it creamy. Add nut butter, tahini, vanilla, and sweetener. Blend until a sticky dough forms.

Step 4 – Adjust texture. If the mixture feels dry, add milk or water 1 tablespoon at a time until it sticks together easily.

Step 5 – Roll & chill. Roll into bite-sized balls, then roll into cacao powder and refrigerate for 20–30 minutes to firm up.

To note, the type of nut butter you use will affect the consistency. I used Meridian almond butter, which is set and quite hard, but if you went for a smoother one like Pip & Nut, the consistency would be different, and you may not need additional liquid.

Tips for Perfect Texture

  • Too dry → add nut butter or a splash of milk

  • Too soft/watery → add oats or protein powder

  • Extra fudgy → add 1 tbsp melted coconut oil

  • Sweeter → add a couple more dates or maple syrup

Enjoy!
